Men’s Rugby Named Sports Club of the Year
To conclude an incredibly successful year full of hard work on and off the field, the University of Iowa Men’s Rugby team has earned the Sports Club of the Year award. This recognition awarded through the University of Iowa’s Division of Student life comes not only with immense distinction, annually honoring only one team out of a fierce pool of over forty potential candidates in both women’s and men’s athletics, but comes with a financial prize of five hundred dollars. This accolade earned as a result of a highly successful season recognizing Men’s Rugby as a club whose commitment to excellence, development, and community made a lasting impact throughout this last year. Officers of the rugby club (pictured above from left to right) John Koprowski, Daniel “Boat” Portz, Sam Zimmermann, and Josh Bell were invited to attend the Sports Programs Award Banquet held at Kinnick Stadium to accept the award on Friday, May 8th. The banquet is historically exclusive to intramural and athletic award winners, but due to the high caliber of performance the rugby team has shown, they are the first sport club award winners to receive an invitation to the event.
Assistant coach Alistair Miller has nothing but pride for the team’s achievement, “A tip of my cap to the young men for their hard work. Leadership always comes at a price: time, energy, emotional stress. I’m glad to see their efforts have been recognized.”
Whether putting in countless hours of dedication and training towards their craft, making time for frequent acts of service within the community, or building an impressive performance history, Men’s Rugby continually stands out. Sports Club of the Year comes as a truly well deserved win.
